Tranformation of a 35sqm, 1930´s apartment in central Oslo.

The apartment is part of the earliest domestic development high rise scheme in Oslo. Because its facade is listed, most original features like light fixtures and materials are still intact. In respect to this we focused on utilising long lasting materials and period-respectful details paying homage to its heritage.

The plan was restructured to fit a modern open plan living. In a 1930´s fashion, the kitchen existed in a separate room, there was a sleeping alcove in the living room and a large hallway. We removed the wall between the living room and hallway, moved the kitchen into the living room and created a separate bedroom.

Due to its small size, storage was built into two large floor-to-ceiling wardrobe units, one in the hallway and one in the bedroom. The bed is raised and constructed to fit three custom storage units underneath.

The material pallet is simple, modern and classic at the same time. With dusty limewash on the walls and ceiling with contrasting stainless steel in the kitchen. We were able to sand down and treat the original floorboards, which ties the palett together and brings warmth to the space. To make a distinction between the living space and bedroom, the floor in the bedroom was painted in a dark brown colour.
